The Proposal
Proposal
Subject – Identity and Place.
To follow and visually document the Friends of Sinfin Moor Park and the work they do on the nature reserve/ park. To document the people that use this space and the environmental impact of changes that Sinfin is currently undergoing over a period of 12 months and to learn more about myself, my environment and to be part of my community.
Aims –
1. To complete an element of my photographic degree.
2. Develop my photographic practice by engaging with my local community to create a project that engages people.
3. To broaden my own relationship with my community and the environment.
4. To help promote and visually educate the community about The Friends of Sinfin Moor Park (FOSMP) on the work they do and the impact we can have on the local environment.
5. To provide the FOSMP images that can be used freely on their website and social media platforms. To help promote and educate the wider community on the work they undertake and its importance.
6. To work alongside FOSMP in terms of photographic work being open to any suggestion they may have.
7. The potential interaction with the nature club on a creative level to create work in a collaborative manner.
8. To record a balanced overview of the surrounding area and the impact we have on the environment – for example images of litter. Giving people room for potential reflection on our actions and the effect on the environment and community. It will not all be visually positive but this will be a balanced consideration as I am aware if the work as no context it has the potential to misrepresent the area.
Target Audience – The local community
Context –
1. Work created will be submitted as part of my degree.
2. Visual work to be display both online and in print
3. At the end of the 12 months my aim is to organize a small local exhibition within the local community – For example the local library. This not only could display my photographic work but also provide a means to promote the FOSMP
4. As the industrial/ Commercial areas continue to grow alongside residential development – Infinity Park and Infinity Garden Village, the more it will impact on the surrounding area. The work of the FOSMP will become increasingly more important in the conservation of the remaining natural habitat as well has creating and maintaining the area for the local community to use and enjoy.
Degree Aims
My overall personal objectives in terms of my photographic degree is to complete this module within 12 months. It comprises of five separate assignments; the whole unit will have around 50 finished images.
Brief descriptions of assignments-
Idea – Approach and ask people who use the park/ nature reserve.
Idea - Portraits of volunteers working outdoors, Portraits of Volunteers at meetings indoors
Mirror – A photographic response to a group/ community you are already part of
Window – A group/ community you are not a part of or know very little about
Idea – This project is both mirror and window –
Mirror; I live within the community
Window I know very little about this group and the community
Both Assignment 4 and 5 will naturally develop over the twelve months.
Final Note
There will be the core subject and purpose – The FOSMP, to visually document its volunteers, there work, the park and the nature reserve. To help raise awareness and to promote them within the local community. The approach to all photographic work will be professional, ethical and considerate. The FOSMP will have control on what appears on there website and social media platforms but FOSMP will have no control over the degree project work which may differ from what appears on there website and social media platforms.
Although having no control over the degree project work this will still be undertaken in a professional and considered manner. I would seek feedback from the FOSMP regarding the degree work and this could be facilitated by monthly updates on the project giving me the opportunity to show and explain the work and giving the FOSMP an opportunity to ask questions, make suggestions and raise any concerns – although if I am working in a professional, ethical and considered manner there should be no concerns.
The proposed time I could give to voluntary photographic work.
To attend; the monthly meetings and the nature club, days when work is being carried out by the group, any special events for example – Community fundays, to photographing the park and nature reserve weekly.
Of course, all the above is flexible and is subject to change. Ultimately the degree work will amount to 40-50 images and that images produced for FOSMP will easily exceed this number and will be fit for purpose for use online and to raise awareness and promote.
